Drive-up ATM Safety Tips

  • Keep your engine running and your doors locked.
  • Keep the windows in your vehicle rolled up as much as possible while using the ATM.
  • When possible, leave enough room between cars to allow for a quick exit should you need to leave immediately.
  • Look around for anyone or anything suspicious and drive away at once if something seems awkward to you.
  • If anyone follows you after making an ATM transaction, go immediately to a crowded, well-lighted area and call the police.

Walk-up ATM Safety Tips

  • Take a good look at the ATM location before conducting your transaction. If you don’t feel comfortable about the location, go to another ATM site.
  • Always try to park as close to the terminal as possible.
  • If possible, don’t go to the ATM by yourself. Try to have a friend or relative go with you, especially at night.
  • Minimize the time you spend at the ATM by having your card ready to use. If you have to wait to use the ATM, give the person in front of you as much space as you would like to have when you conduct your transaction and allow them to move away from the ATM before you approach the terminal.
  • While conducting your transaction stand between the ATM and anyone waiting so that they will not be able to see your PIN or transaction amount.
  • After completing your transaction, take your money, card and receipt and immediately move away from the terminal.
  • When conducting a transaction, if someone or something makes you feel uncomfortable, cancel your transaction and leave immediately.
  • If anyone follows you after making an ATM transaction, go immediately to a crowded, well lighted area and call the police.
